I think that a lot of us have experienced seeing Diana in concert or on tape where she is really "into" what she's singing. She's not focused on showing us her "correct jazz technique" or pleasing the jazz gods, but just conveying the deep meaning of the song through singing and playing.

Yes Coda, I agree. I think there are moments that are just 'magical' when seeing Diana perform. I know this summer when I saw her perform there were a couple of times when you could 'hear a pin drop' as they say and then the applause afterwards was deafening; especially when she performed 'A Case of You' and during her encore performance of 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart'. Diana is like an actor at times and becomes the song so to speak I guess. Very moving. She is just wonderful.

I agree, Sue. (May I call you Sue? ) Most all of the Connecticut show this summer was like that, especially "Little Girl Blue," "If I Had You" and "How Can You Mend." Breathtaking. Magnificent.

I must share with you, Sue, that hearing Diana and John Clayton and co. perform "Little Girl Blue" was an ear- and eye-opening experience. As a fan, at that point, of less than five months, I had not yet taken especial note of that lovely song. I was still (and am still somewhat) in the mode of discovering and latching onto new songs from time to time as they grabbed me. "I Remember You" hit me right away when I borrowed "The Look of Love" from a friend. Others followed. But I hadn't yet gotten to "Little Girl Blue," or, more accurately, it hadn't yet gotten to me. I had heard it before (or at least my iPod had played it 5 times), but it hadn't hit me yet.

Seeing and hearing her perform it live, to the accompaniment, especially, of John Clayton's somber, soft, lush, gorgeous sawings on the bass, well, Sue, that song is lovely in recorded form, but, gracious, there is nothing like it live. It takes my breath away even now, thinking back on it, three months on. I hope you get to see her do it someday soon.

PS: Noting that "Little Girl Blue" especially resonated with me, because it reminded me so of one whom I love, especially when performed in the same show as "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?" But that is a conversation for another place and time!
