"Quiet Nights" Release Week Thread

As something of an experiment, how about we try having a single umbrella thread to cover anything having to do with this special week? TV show appearances, comments on the album itself, interviews, articles - basically a free for all :hello:

Really looking forward to the most significant release since FTMO on 19 Sep 2006!!

In case anyone is interested in previewing the album, you can listen to it at Universal's site: http://www.universalmusic.com/firstplay

Hope you like it as much as we do!

Just downloaded my pre-order from iTunes! Actually received the email notice at 11:05 p.m. last night. Not listening to anything until after work, when it can be a more special occasion.

If you downloaded the album from iTunes and downloaded Walk on By as part of the pre-order deal, be sure to change Walk on By's album title to Quiet NIghts!

After spending the night with Quiet Nights, let me be the first boarder to congratulate Diana, Tommy, Claus and the whole gang for another phenomenal album. Let the tour begin...

"i'm not a big fan of the look of love."

I was just teasing, Miss SaxLix. I may have drank one too many last night.

I do find it interesting that you're not a LOL fan. Usually it's GITOR that people don't like.

I have to agree with SaxLix here. This album is kind of a snoozer (as is LOL). Still a faithful fan but just not into the new album. :eh:

Weird. I can't be the only one who's diggin the new disc. I think it's right up there with her best stuff. However, I do wish Diana would refrain from singing in Spanish. If you speak the language, as I do, Este Seu Olhar has to make you cringe a bit.

Well, don't kick yourself too much. It's only natural that my opinion would fall in line with SaxLix's since we live together. ;)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of this one either, but I knew that would be the case. Never liked Look of Love, I much prefer her trio and quartet albums, and GITOR is still my favourite. I'm still going to go see the concert if/ when the show comes to town here in London because I always enjoy seeing her live, but I don't think I'll be buying the album - what I've heard so far on the radio is - as many reviewers have pointed out - a bit too bland. And the breathy vocals a bit too breathy. I hope she ditches the strings next time around and goes back to her piano basics.

I couldn't have said any better than that, Scielle. Agree about the strings and breathy singing - I'm not diggin' it. Agree that trios/quartets are her best forum.

Well, maybe you ladies will enjoy the QN songs performed live. On the road, it'll only be the quartet. But I'm afraid you'll still get the "too breathy" vocals.

Scielle, I think that European tour dates are smiling to us..official site has Denmark and Switzerland, but three days ago, believe me or not, a saw much more European tour dates listed, including London and Vienna :blob:

I also prefer GITOR than Quiet Nigts, but this is also really great, great record. If she'll come somewhere near Croatia (Austria, Italy, Hungary...) I'll definitely go !

Nice to see some divergent opinions here! :)

I've listened to the whole album probably seven or eight times now. As I think I said earlier, I thought this album was destined to be TLOL Part 2. In terms of the overall tempo and arrangements by Claus Ogerman, I guess it is. But its really a whole lot more. For one, Diana has been through enormous life experiences since 2001, with extreme highs and lows. The emotions of the past 8 years come through. I also think that this was one of her most challenging albums in terms of vocals. Very exposed, and she stretches the limit of her range on So Nice.

I suggest its best to listen to this album very closely, through headphones with minimal distraction if possible. Not while driving, for example. Only then can you really pay attention to the subtleties of her performance. She does an amazing job.

Anyway, I can understand the desire for a more straight-ahead, swinging jazz album. I wouldn't mind that either. But Quiet Nights is quite an achievement in Diana's career.

scielle - The post from Universal higher up this thread is worth a look if you haven't checked it out already. It has full tracks from the entire album - not just samples...
