I'll be honest, I haven't listened to the whole album. But what I have heard is what I was afraid of. This album is pretty awful. There. I said it.

It would have been really difficult for her to come close to "From This Moment On," which I thought was her best effort since WILIYE. I enjoyed her interpretation of "How can you mend a broken heart." When I heard the first verse of "Guess I'll hang my tears out to dry," my first thoughts were of Linda Ronstadt and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra doing this song 25+ years ago--and how incredible Linda's version is compared to DK's. DK does not have the vocal chops for that song. Period. I think Jane Monheit did this song as well, and did it better.

That being said, I'll take Bud's advice and listen to this with headphones on. Hopefully I'll come to enjoy this opus as I did LOL. But TGITOR didn't ever appeal to me. I don't think I even have this on my iPod anymore.

For what it's worth, I blame all of this on ELVIS COSTELLO. Her two worst albums were a direct result of her relationship/marriage to him.

That is all.

I have to agree with Lucky with all his points of view.

Musically, this album - even if it's wonderfully produced - is quite.. boring, I haven't been able to listen to all the tracks yet... :sigh:
Where is the jazzy Diana from the AFY or WILIYE albums ?

Well, the good news (I hope) is that Diana will stay Diana when she plays live, the real jazzwoman I love. :D

Wow, looks like Bud, Andrea and I are alone here. Ok. But as I said before, and as Remi also pointed out, I predict you'll all like QN a little better once you hear it performed live with the quartet.

And yes Bud, I feel the same way about Besame Mucho. To these ears, DK's accent is pretty harsh. I'd be curious to hear Samuel from Brazil's thoughts on the subject.

Yeah, about that - I found her version of La Vie en Rose tough to get through as well. Good effort Diana (and there's a video I saw somewhere in which she says she's learning Portugese) - but I say stick with singing in English!

My first listen to the album was in the car on the way home from work, not the best environment for a critical appraisal. I was somewhat disappointed by the pace, but then I remember feeling the same way about the Look of Love the first time I heard it under similar circumstances. I have since listened to Quiet Nights a few times at home (Dina is singing Walk on By right now), and I have to agree with Bud in Virginia - I think this album is a wonderful achievement, very beautiful. Diana sings beautifully and the orchestration is wonderful.

Now, having said that, I really do prefer the toe-tapping, swinging trio albums...if it's possible to wear out a CD, I'm getting close to wearing out All for You and Love Scenes! I know I'm preaching to the converted on this forum, but if any of you haven't got the Live in Paris DVD, go and buy it...right now. Have you gone yet? It is simply the very best music DVD out there.

Hey scielle, imagine how stupid I felt when last night my girlfriend asked: "Well, what do the lyrics mean?"
"Hell, I don't know. On second thought, I don't think this is even Spanish."
It's not. Este Seu Olhar is Portuguese.

In any case, yes, Diana should stick to English.

Diana did have a theme in mind and stuck to it. Quiet Nights is definitely an appropriate title! Any fast paced swinging track wouldn't have fit.

Of course, that doesn't explain why the QN video was filmed almost entirely in the daytime, but I digress...

Remi, I sure hope so, and I do agree, I love her performances live much better than the polished versions... Live at the Motreal Jazz festival is an excellent CD .. We'll let you know Apr. 26 after we see her live in Kitchener Ontario. So far the samples of QN I've heard have been not so good.. ...

Bought QN at Starbucks Wed and listened to half of it, in the car admittedly. So far, I'm in the mostly blah camp, but I've not given it the close listen you recommend, Bud. For the record, I LOVE TLOL, it was my first acquaintance to DK, and I Remember You is my ATF. Since then, I've come to prefer WILIYE and to find TLOL to be maybe a notch below, slight notch, All For You. Anyhow, this album seems, so far to me, to lack passion and intensity. I feel that Diana reached a discernable peak in her career with AFY, WILIYE and TLOL and is down a step from that peak. Feels to me like she has a lot of her focus and intensity in her kids and in her personal life. Totally to be expected. I reckon the next album will find her musically on the upswing.

Very preliminary take on things, subject to evolution. Still a big fan and hope to catch her a time or two this summer.

Cheers,

-Chris

I would have agreed with that two years ago or so, in the frenzied rush of new fandom. I've since become acquainted with Alison Krauss, and I've found Diana has receded for me somewhat. Still like her a lot, love her at times, but there are other times where Alison is my gal, and I find her AKUS performance DVD, filmed in Louisville, KY, to be the equal, if not the superior, of Live in Paris. Just sayin'. Still love Diana, but I have other musical loves, must confess. ...

And yes Bud, I feel the same way about Besame Mucho. To these ears, DK's accent is pretty harsh. I'd be curious to hear Samuel from Brazil's thoughts on the subject.

Hi Mapache... you, Bud and Andrea is no more alone, I'm back

I'm very surprised with all words I read here. I understood the most part of you expected a little more of Jazz even though it would be a album inspired in Bossa Nova rhythm. In fact, I expected too... but QN it's a great album.

At the first time I heard "The Look of Love" album I didn't liked it so much and along the days I keep listening anyway because I love Diana's way to play and sing. In brief: I started to appreciat a lot of songs from TLOL and most important, I learned to appreciat this kind of songs.
Now Quiet Nights is special album to me. The brazilians influences and specially 'Este Seu Olhar' made me very very happy. I noticed Diana Krall found another way to express herself on the music and I'm satisfied with that. :D

Well said, Sam!

I'll admit that I haven't always instantly taken to her albums. But after multiple listens, at least some of which had my undivided attention, they really grew on me.

Interesting feedback on Este Seu Olhar. mapache61 and scielle, and I'm sure some others, would prefer that she stick to English..

Alison Krauss + Union Station is awesome. "New Favorite" is by far my favorite album by them (For those of you who don't know, the male vocalist--can't think of his name--is the one who sang "Man of Constant Sorrow" in O Brother Where Art Thou). I've often thought of slitting my wrists when I listen to "Whiskey Lullaby"--which is just one nanometer less depressing than "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

Much like Diana, I'm not very fond of AK's ventures outside of Bluegrass/Twangy Country.

I've listened to the album now about 3-4 times (I just got back into town from a short road trip). I listened to it on the road in my car and I would say it's not a driving cd, too quite; but I think Bud's idea is absolutely spot on; when you listen to this album closely and just sit back and relax it really is amazing! Great work in my opinion. I think from seeing Diana perform on the talk show ciruit this past week that when she performs these songs live people will be amazed! I love the album; now trying to decide which tunes are my favorite :D .

One other item of note: Was in a Starbucks over the weekend and found that their i-tunes song card was Diana's 'Boy from Ipanima' ! Anyone else see this. I took several cards just to have them as I already had the songs!

Now I can't wait for the DVD! :D

Hope to see you and Ang too!

I know all about the road to the venue. When I was in high school I had a friend who lived on Pierce Road, not too far from venue (this friend did not go to my high school, just to be clear). In fact, my friend said you could hear the concerts sometimes from the house.
