Diana Krall to teach free master class at Tri-C the day after her PlayhouseSquare gig
Once again, Cuyahoga County Community College will benefit from its association with former Clevelander and legendary jazz producer Tommy LiPuma.
It’s LiPuma’s name on the downtown campus’ Center for Creative Arts, and it’s his relationship with jazz great Diana Krall – he produced her second album and has been at the helm of at least six Krall LPs – that will bring the sultry jazz singer to the school for a free master class on Monday, Sept. 30.
The night before, Krall plays Playhouse Square’s State Theatre. Tickets to that 7:30 p.m. show are $10 to $102, plus fees, available at the box office, online at playhousesquare.org and by phone at 216-241-6000 and 1-866-546-1353.
The master class, which will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on the Mainstage Theatre of Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus, 2900 Community College Ave. Though it targets high school and middle school students, it is open to the public, but tickets are required. Reserve your ticket at 216-987-4444 or online at kralltricmasterclass.eventbrite.com.
Grammy-winner Krall has sold 6 million albums in the United States and 15 million worldwide. According to a release from Tri-C, she’s the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums charts.
Her relationship with LiPuma, who will moderate a question and answer session with his protégé, began with her album “Only Trust Your Heart,’’ in 1995, and has lasted through several platinum and multiplatinum releases.
She and her husband, Elvis Costello, have twin sons, who will turn 7 on Dec. 6.
Tommy LiPuma, a Cleveland native and the chairman emeritus of Verve Records, gave Tri-C $3 million, the largest private donation in its history. And he's still giving. He will moderate a master class featuring his protege, Diana Krall, at the school on Monday, Sept. 30.
