56th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival Lineup Announced: Diana Krall, Bobby McFerrin and More

Today Monterey Jazz Festival announces the star-studded line up for its 56th annual Monterey Jazz Festival to be held September 20-22 at the Monterey Fairgrounds. Arena and Grounds Package Tickets go on sale on to the general public on May 21. Single Day tickets will go on sale July 8.

2013's GRAMMY Award-winning lineup includes Arena headliners Diana Krall; Wayne Shorter Quartet; Bobby McFerrin; Bob James & David Sanborn featuring Steve Gadd & James Genus; Dave Holland's PRISM featuring Kevin Eubanks, Craig Taborn & Eric Harland; Joe Lovano & Dave Douglas Quintet: Sound Prints; George Benson; The Relatives; Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club; Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra; and Gregory Porter.

Here's the official MJF writeup on Diana. I believe it would have been better to be in Monterey yesterday than Candlestick Park, where I witnessed the trouncing of the 49ers by the Colts.

Krall, the weekend finale, performed with a six-piece band reflecting her recent forays into vintage rock, Americana and the Roaring ’20s on the album “Glad Rag Doll,” though she also played a solo segment. Her husky whisper on ballads was breathtaking, especially “Let It Rain,” from 1928, and the Joni Mitchell classic, “A Case of You.” Krall also tipped her hat to Dylan with “Simple Twist of Fate.”

Krall may be officially midstream in her career, but she keeps surprising, as with her cool new T-Bone Burnett-produced celebration of ‘20s swagger, Glad Rag Doll. Best of all, for encores, she gave her rough velvet treatment of deep cuts from the songbook of The Band, including “Whispering Pines” and “Ophelia.” For that alone, we salute her.
