What is there to do in Southern Ontario?

Looking for suggestions.

I'm going to plan a day trip, so no night clubs/bars (it's not our thing anyway). not really looking for sports activities ie. skiing. I guess I'm looking for places to see, eat at, maybe shopping...

Last time we drove up to Ikea and didn't have time for anything else. I haven't been to Toronto in years, but I forget what's around there. I think Eaton Centre is there, right?

PS. since I live in Buffalo, I'm talking further than Niagara Falls.

Thanks!

When are you going? (Or am I late already?)
Well, a nice place to hang out is Harbour Front - basically the Lake Ontario waterfront. It probably isn't all that scenic at this time of the year, but during the summer months, they tend to have great festivals, street artists, free music (I think DK used to play there back in the day), plus there's a nice harbour and the Power Plant modern art gallery. If you're into shopping - Queen St. (East) is full of quirky, ecclectic shops.
Then there's Honest Ed's - a historic bargain mecca, and a brilliant trip back in time. Nothing trendy to buy there, but it's a slice just strolling through the place, with all of its vintage music theatre posters and headshots with personal messages from star XYZ to Mr. Mirvish (Ed Mirvish, the store owner - aka Honest Ed - owns a musical theatre empire in Toronto and has plenty of friends in high places, plus does a lot for charity. One fascinating guy). They've got great slogans. See http://www.mirvish.com/

Oh, and don't forget to check out Diana's Walk of Fame 'maple leaf' in front of Roy Thompson Hall.

The Eaton Centre's no fun. Just your average mall.

OK, a bit more about Mr. Mirvish - if you're a Lord of the Rings fan, you may want to visit T.O. in Feb. 2006. Ed and his son David announced yesterday that they're producing the world premiere of LOTR, the musical (to run in Toronto for 6 months, then in London, then Broadway) A $27 million production; and apparently the 'biggest and most ambitious theatrical project ever staged'. Hm, this better be good...

If anyone happens to be in the T.O. area in early June - here's a show not to be missed: TSO
Oscar Peterson, Ron Sexsmith, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra - together! :thud:
