6. Diana Krall, Departure Bay: The singer/pianist closed one of her best, most inspired albums with two painful songs about her mother, whose 2002 death is written about for the first time here. The best of the pair is Departure Bay. "Last year we were laughing, we sang in church so beautifully," Krall sings, delivering lyrics she co-wrote with husband Elvis Costello. "Now her perfume's on the bathroom counter and I'm sitting in the back pew crying."
