Love Is The Answer provides an opportunity for Streisand to work for the first time with the Grammy-winning Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall and her quartet (piano, guitar, bass, drums) who bring a refined and sensual poignancy to the album's sophisticated and subtle accompaniments.

Rounding out the album's smoky after-hours ambience with his sublime orchestrations is the legendary songwriter ("The Shadow of Your Smile") and Grammy-winning arranger Johnny Mandel (who worked with Streisand on her 1993 Back to Broadway album and arranged/co-produced Krall's 1998 Grammy-winning When I Look In Your Eyes).

The deluxe version of Love Is The Answer is a two-disc package that features the Mandel arranged orchestra versions on disc one and quartet counterparts on disc two featuring Barbra accompanied only by quartet (piano, bass, guitar & drums).

Included among the highlights of Love Is The Answer are:

"Make Someone Happy," a song from the 1960s musical "Do Re Mi," with lyrics by Comden and Green and music by Jule Styne, who wrote the music for Streisand's breakout performance in "Funny Girl."

"In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" - the jazz standard closely associated with Frank Sinatra.

"If You Go Away (Ne Me Quitte Pas)" - A quintessential version of the Jacques Brel standard performed in English and French.

"Spring Can Really Hang You Up," a song Streisand first sang in a St. Louis club at the age of 18. This is her first studio produced version of this jazz standard.

"Gentle Rain" a gentle bossa nova from "Black Orpheus," the motion picture which introduced the world to the rhythms of Brazilian music.

"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," the quintessential dreamy standard, originally written as a show tune by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach for the 1933 operetta "Roberta," covered by Nat "King" Cole and the Platters, among others.

"Some Other Time," a rarely-covered gem composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Comden and Green from the 1944 musical "On The Town."

The complete track listing for Love Is The Answer will feature:

1. "Here's To Life" (Artie Butler/Phyllis Molinary)

2. "In The Wee Small Hours" (Bob Hilliard/David Mann)

3. "Gentle Rain" (Luiz Bonfa/Matt Dubey)

4. "If You Go Away" (Jacques Brel/Rod McKuen)

5. "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" (Tommy Wolf/Fran Landesman)

7. "Where Do You Start?"(Johnny Mandel/Alan Bergman/Marilyn Bergman)

8. "A Time For Love" (Johnny Mandel/Paul Francis Webster)

9. "Here's That Rainy Day" (Johnny Burke/Jimmy Van Heusen)

11. "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (Jerome Kern/Otto Harbach)

12. "Some Other Time" (Leonard Bernstein/Betty Comden/Adolph Green)

13. Bonus Track - "You Must Believe In Spring" (Michel Legrand/Alan & Marilyn Bergman)

The deluxe package includes the following bonus disc:

Many of you may have heard about this already......(from Barbara's website).....

"Barbra Streisand performs free at New York's Fabled Village Vanguard for a Once-in-a-Lifetime Show for a Select Group of Lucky Fans.
In what promises to be a once-in-a lifetime thrill for a hundred of her luckiest fans, Barbra Streisand will celebrate the release of Love Is The Answer---her new album of jazz standards and classics--- by singing a selection of these songs at New York¹s legendary Village Vanguard on Saturday, September 26, where she last performed in 1961 as the opening act for Miles Davis.

Free tickets to Barbra Streisand’s performance at New York’s Village Vanguard will be made available only to fans who either pre-order this exciting new CD or register an entry blank free of charge. Full details and rules can be found here.

Barbra Streisand’s history with the Village Vanguard dates back 48 years when she sang one night only on a bill starring Miles Davis. Subsequently Streisand , built a reputation in Greenwich Village as an extraordinary newcomer on the scene, a not-to-be-missed star on the rise singing in clubs like The Lion and Bon Soir. With its astounding acoustics and intimate vibe, The Village Vanguard, an epicenter of the New York jazz scene since an all-jazz policy was implemented in 1957, was, and is, the place to play.

The first full-length collection of new studio recordings from eight-time Grammy award winner Barbra Streisand since 2005's Guilty Pleasures, and first new Barbra Streisand album since Live In Concert 2006, Love Is The Answer showcases the artist as a cabaret and jazz singer of emotional clarity, depth and maturity, offering the listener a warm and intimate selection of late night meditations on love's powers, heartbreaks and solaces.

Love Is The Answer provided an opportunity for Streisand to work for the first time with the Grammy-winning Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall (piano) and her quartet (guitar, bass, drums) who brought a refined and sensual poignancy to the album's spare and subtle accompaniments.

Rounding out the album's smoky after hours ambience with his sublime orchestrations is the legendary songwriter ("The Shadow of Your Smile") and Grammy-winning arranger Johnny Mandel (who worked with Streisand on her 1993 Back to Broadway album and arranged/co-produced Krall's 1998 Grammy-winning When I Look In Your Eyes). "

I checked on the sites of DK and the trio's individual sites and it seems as though no one has anything listed for the date of this event....... does anyone think that maybe Diana and the group will be the 'band' for the evening ?????...... anyway I entered the contest..... who knows; 100 lucky people have to win - why not me ???!!!......

Well this is interesting. Babs dated Trudeau for a while - some say they even came close to tying the knot. We would have had a left-wing Canadian version of Sarkozy/ Bruni...

http://www.torontosun.com/entertainment/celebrities/2009/09/06/10767846-sun.html

The sultry Canadian jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall has become likethis with none other than the sultry American superstar Barbra Streisand.

And one of their favourite subjects is politics, especially former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

Krall, 43, was with Babs at a Columbia Records studio get-together a few months back when Streisand was talking politics and suddenly brought up Trudeau, comparing his oratory skills with American President Barack Obama.

Streisand "was waxing poetic about how suave a politician she thought Trudeau was and, honestly, not many people around here really know anything about him.

"So when Diana starts quoting Trudeau, Barbra gets totally excited and they go off and have this huge bonding experience," said a music agent who was at the get-together.

"You'd think they were talking about Brad Pitt," he said. "They really like each other because they're both musicians and they're both smart chicks."

Krall, brought up in Nanaimo, B.C., while Trudeau was in power, started hanging with Streisand last year as Krall acted as producer and pianist for Streisand's album, Love is the Answer, and got progressively closer.

And although Love is the Answer is finished and will be released at the end of the month, the relationship between the song birds is reportedly still going strong.

Krall took time from her own west-coast tour promoting her album, Quiet Nights, last week to meet her friend at Moonshadow's, a cozy beachside restaurant near Streisand's Malibu mansion.

It was just the girls at dinner, reports a waitress -- Krall's better half, Elvis Costello presumably was watching their twin boys -- as they drank white wine and laughed for hours.

Only a handful of public tickets were made available for the performance — the club's capacity is 123. But if you weren't able to get inside, don't worry: You can watch the concert on Streisand's Web site next week.

There was a nice Rita Braver interview of Streisand on today's CBS Sunday Morning. A few clips from the Village Vanguard performance were shown.

I didn't know Barbra is the best-selling female performing artist of all-time!

No mention of the producer of her album...

Ever since word got out that Diana Krall would produce Barbra Streisand's new album, music fans have wondered how two of the most admired artists of their respective generations would forge a creative camaraderie.
"We ate a lot," Streisand reports. "There's something about recording that makes me want to eat. We would bring in Italian food, or go out to dinner. Diana taught me how to roll a piece of chicken with cheese inside and put it in the microwave."

Making Love Is the Answer, the collection of traditional pop and jazz standards that arrives Tuesday, Streisand, 67, and Krall, 44, also played cards, traded stories about growing up and talked about "girly-girl stuff," as Krall puts it. And they challenged each other.

"Diana records differently than I usually do," says Streisand, whose last studio album was 2005's Guilty Pleasures. "I mostly sing live with an orchestra, where she'll sing with a quartet, then add the orchestra later." Working at Hollywood's legendary Capitol Studios with co-producer Tommy LiPuma, Krall set Streisand's vocals against both lush orchestral settings and intimate jazz-quartet arrangements. The latter are available on a bonus disc in the deluxe version of Love.

"The most fun we had, in a way, was with the quartet," Streisand says. "It was a throwback to the way I sang in clubs when I was 18 or 19 or 20."

The tracks were arranged by Johnny Mandel, who had worked previously with Streisand and Krall. Mandel's music also is represented in the collection, along with tunes by Jerome Kern, Leonard Bernstein and Jacques Brel.

"Most of these are songs I've wanted to sing for a long time," says Streisand. In a few cases, as with Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, she had recorded the songs previously but hadn't been satisfied with the results.

Krall suggested material, making mix tapes for the diva. "I did research from the time I was pregnant" with her twin sons (who'll be 3 in December) by husband Elvis Costello. In a sense, she started long before that: "I've always admired (Streisand) as a singer, and a comic actress. The first movie I ever watched was What's Up, Doc?"

When sessions started, "I was just like, 'Oh, my gosh, do I deserve to be here?' " Krall says. Streisand "is a perfectionist in a way that I really respect. She's intensely intense."

When the star sang something Krall really liked, "she would point to the hairs on her arm standing up," Streisand says. "It was cute, my audience of one."

On Saturday night, Streisand promoted Love in another intimate setting, delivering a joyfully virtuosic performance at New York's Village Vanguard — her first nightclub gig since 1962. Attendees included the Clintons (Bill, Hillary and Chelsea), Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Donna Karan. Highlights from the show are streaming this week at AOL and barbrastreisand.com.

Though a tour isn't planned, "it wouldn't be out of the question — not if I could go to places I haven't been, or where I haven't performed this type of music," Streisand says. Regardless, she looks back on the process of making Love fondly: "Diana is a good friend, and it's lovely to work with talented people."

Krall concurs. "I miss her. I would love to sit down with her for a meal again."
