Does Quiet Nights Remind You of Any Earlier DK Works?

Postby christratton on 18 Mar 2009, 20:55

It does me - feels a lot like I Remember You and a little like Besame Mucho and The Night We Called It A Day. Very "The Look of Love" - the return of the Bossa Nova. On a first listen, I think it's beautiful, and the video, which I saw at Amazon, is lovely. What do you think?
Every day, to myself I say,
Point the way, what would it be?
I ask myself what's the best thing for you,
And myself and I seem to agree,
That the best thing for you would be me. ... :)

I wish that she did something new and fresh. Of course, she is so excellent at what she does, but to me, it feels like she was not taking any chances, she wasn't getting out of her comfort zone - that is not sticking with the good-old " The Look of Love" and " When I Look In Your Eyes" vibe. The commercial side of it. I really hope that she'll do some more trio recordings or even solo piano/vocal stuff, maybe recording some more originals. Just something new. Hmmm....

I agree, KJazz, that it wasn't her boldest move ever, but "I Remember You" is one of my four or five favorite of her songs - probably my favorite, in fact and certainly my first love - so I am very pleased with the resemblance. ...

Hey Chris!

I'm really looking forward to the release of Quiet Nights! There is clearly a similarity between TLOL and QN. For what its worth, I think Diana's initial and driving inspiration was Brazil and Bossa Nova, not to remake TLOL. If Bossa Nova is what you're inspired to do, who better to work with than Claus Ogerman? Everything seems to have looped back, which isn't a bad thing at all.

Its been a long time since TLOL was released: Sep 18 2001! Her journey has taken quite a few turns since then, including, of course, GITOR, which as we all know was an enormous stretch.

Along the lines of what kjazz said, I really look forward to an album that features Diana alone with her piano!
