Okay, I thought I would finally weigh in on the album. I just bought the CD today. (I wanted to do that sooner, but I just couldn't get to an appropriate store right away.) Of course, I'd already heard Diana play certain songs on her appearances. But I wanted to take Bud's advice to sit down and listen to it carefully.
I appreciate that it's a concept album. It does stay in a slow groove for the whole album, which could be either a big plus or a big minus. When I first started listening to it, I wasn't doing anything else, and I think that I tried too hard to listen to it. I needed to pause and then picked it up again about an hour later. But I also wanted to do a crossword puzzle and drink some tea while I was listening to it the second time, so that's what I did. When I did that, I found myself in a different place with the album. So I would recommend listening to it while you're doing something else that's pleasant....
I think Claus's orchestrations are lush, as usual, and maybe even better than with Frank Sinatra's album with Jobim.
I don't think I'd want to listen to this album all the time, but at certain times, yes.
That said, I hope that Diana's next album offers us a greater variety of tempos. I like Diana's singing and have enjoyed listening to her singing ability evolve over the years. I think it's really developed in range, especially after Dex and Frank were born. (I have no idea if there's any connection, but I do think Diana is generally less self-conscious about herself now, so maybe that's why.) Anyway, I think this album doesn't offer Diana a showcase for her full vocal talent, so I hope another album, and her concerts, will show off her more of her singing and piano skills.
