Quiet Nights

Artist: DIANA KRALL

Genre: Jazz
(Verve/Universal)

Reviewer: YVONNE TAN

DIANA Krall’s 12th album is a lovely melange of sensual laid-back bossa novas and breathy ballads which are quite capable of touching the soul. Here, she teams up with veteran producer Tommy LiPuma and legendary arranger Claus Ogerman to come up with tracks that are soothing, sultry and unconventionally intimate.

The songs here drip with raw emotion and are so personal that it’s as if she is whispering into your ears. My personal favourite is one of the two bonus tracks offered here, the cover version of the Bee Gees’ How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

Herself a gifted piano player, Krall intersperses her singing with some piano playing which is quite delightful. Even if not all the 12 songs are to my preference, Krall’s silky, sexy and hushed tones are worth the price of entry.

Quiet Nights is definitely not your usual romantic album meant to provide the backdrop to a dreamy candle-lit dinner. Get it only if you want real, earthy music.
