Washington Post: Diana Krall's Personal Touch

Nice job by the Post. Charmed Life even gets a mention - but just the Canadian release, not that special Target edition of TLOL... I'm going to her concert tomorrow night!

At their first meeting at the Grammys, Krall had told Costello she'd been trying to cover "The Long Honeymoon" from "Imperial Bedroom," Costello's standards-inspired album, as well as "My Thief" from "Painted From Memory," his collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Both Costello's and Bacharach's songs are known for the challenges they can present singers, and Krall said she was having trouble with the vocal arrangements. Costello, whose own career embraces creative iconoclasm -- he's explored new wave, pop, country and classical -- offered to help.

"When I met him I just said, 'Look, I really admire you because you've done everything that you wanted and I don't know what's going on with me but there's something,' " Krall recalls. "This was even before the loss of my mother, but I was already creatively preparing to do something different. I think I probably talked to him about my frustrations with how to do it, talked to him honestly about how I felt and where I was going creatively."

Is this your first Krall concert Bud? You'll love it. I'm going to the Houston concert on July 10th and taking a new Krall Fan. This friend played in a jazz band many years ago, and taught piano. She said that without a doubt that Diana is the best jazz pianist today.
Thanks for all the great finds Bud. I don't know how you do it.

Thanks Char -- The Post article was an easy find, since I get the print edition and the article took up a full page this morning including the picture. As for other articles - its a trade secret :-) (but I do use a set of search engines, some more well known than others).

Kind of hard to believe, but Saturday will actually be the sixth concert I've attended, and number seven will follow in a couple weeks when I'm in California. I'm really looking forward to hearing her perform live again and finding out what she does with the new material in concert.

Hey, Bud. The Mountain Winery concert will be my seventh as well. We'll be tied! Can't wait to share a beer with ya! ;)

Hi, Bud: Thanks for the article. You find some hard-to-find stuff and I appreciate your scouring the internet!

By the way, when did you get Diana's autograph? I've seen the picture of the autograph under your name for quite a while.

(I'm hoping there will be some official occasion for autographs when Diana comes to Detroit, because I've struck out twice trying to wait by the stage door for her...security guards stopping me.)

Autograph story

Hi Coda --

I don't remember anyone asking about Diana's signature before. Its from a personally handwritten thank you note she sent to me awhile back - on a Hallmark card, as you might guess. Although I'd prefer not to discuss why she sent it to me, what I did wasn't really all that extravagant.

That she would take the time to write me just goes to show you that she is a genuine person and truly a class act. But I think we all knew that already!

It really wasn't an orange card, by the way. I took a digital photo the card and due to the lighting it came out that color. The card color is the usual off-white.
