SHE has a new husband and the status of a successful songwriter so it"s no wonder that Diana Krall claims she"s feeling "very happy" at the moment. But the singer, who plays BirminghamNIA Academy tomorrow, says her achievements are partly the result of a deeply sad period.
After the death of her mother in 2002, Diana was determined to do something positive with her grief so she began work on her album The Girl In The Other Room.
"You could say it"s been my way of dealing with what I"ve gone through in the last two or three years - a more constructive way, hopefully, than just going down into the basement and hurling glasses at the wall," she says.
Her sadness was eased by her marriage last year to rock star Elvis Costello with whom she"s written new material for her album.
"It was so exciting to be composing music, knowing that Elvis Costello was just next door working on lyrics to accompany it," she reveals. "That"s where I got the the album"s title, I was the girl in the other room.
"His work ethic is extraordinary.
I"ve never seen anything like it. And he was so understanding of what I was going through. "I wasn"t sure marriage was ever going to happen for me. And as for children? If it happens, it happens. Let"s wait and see."
Diana is looking to increase her public profile, revealing: "Last year I made a cameo appearance in a Woody Allen film, Anything Else, and that"s given me the taste to attempt something in film."

Hm, feeling a bit queasy about this. As much as I'm sure dabbling in the thespian arts would be a valuable experience, the track record of musicians-turned-actors isn't exactly stellar....
