Las Vegas - June 15th & June 16th....

Postby jazzanddianafan on 17 Jun 2007, 23:03

I just got back from a great weekend in LV filled with great music, great food, an extra surprise, and even a bit of their money in my pocket !

It was wonderful to see Diana with the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra..... The Orchestra did a couple great songs on their own and then Diana came onstage. I can't keep a set listing going during the show because I am just into the music and the feel of the place, but since she had the orchestra, I do remember her doing 'Isn't it a Lovely day', "How insensitive', & 'Willow Weep for Me' from the new CD. I remember 'Let's face the Music & Dance' and 'East of the Sun' & ' I Don't Know Enought About You' when she was playing with Jeff, Anthony & John. She stood and sang several with the orchestra, saying it was her frst time at standing at the mic and being the 'girl singer'.... and then over to the piano to sit down and do a few more, then John & Jeff came over to the piano area and she did a few with just the trio. Once, she started a song standing up and said she got caught up in the swing of it and had to sit down and join in !

She talked about being a new mother and how she was maybe a bit more 'voluptuous' than the past due to just having twins !.... she said she was a bit concerned that she didn't want the first song her children sang at pre-school to be '10 cents a Dance', so she had been singing kids songs to the new twins and she did say she was going to be working on a CD of childrens music. She seemed to be having a great time being 'in the town of Sinatra and Nat King Cole'. I did notice that the Saturday show was being filmed, so maybe a DVD is in the works. While I was walking thru the casino on Friday I saw her walking by and later that night she said she tried to go over to the 'Star Trek Experence' there at the Hilton, but the line was just too long...

Our seats for Friday were on the CHJO side of the stage and we couldn't see Diana's hands on the piano, but Saturday we were on the other side and could watch her paly and had a much better view when she was singin with Anthony, Jeff, and John.

I was lucky enough to have backstage passes for Friday night, so after the show my cousin and I followed Michelle & Elvis down under the stage to a nice room they had set up for guests. We had a glass of wine and met another couple there from Vancouver who had won a charity bid to benefit the VBH & UBC Foundation on a package trip which included tickets and the backstage 'meet & greet'. There were quite a few people there and when Diana came in it took quite a while for her to make it over to where my cousin and I were. We didn't get to talk long, just a pretty quick hello and some introductions, but it was fun to see her again. I did get to say hi to Anthony Wilson, I don't remember seeing Jeff backstage, but several of the CHJO were around. Elvis came in for a while but I didn't get a chance to talk..... I did get an opportunity to talk a bit with Michelle. My cousin and I had arranged to meet some friends later in the evening and Diana was very busy with friends, so we called it a night and went back upstairs.

The two shows were similar, but not all the same - and with Diana the same song done twice is a bit different each time anyway. It was a wonderful weekend of great music. I can't wait until August when Anthony, Jeff, John and Diana come to Eugene so I can see them again !!

Oh yeah - the 'extra surprise'..... while wondering thru the shops located under the Planet Hollywood Hotel (formally the Aladdin), I came across a wonderful place called "The Art of Music" which had movie posters, records, guitars, and other 'celebrity & rock and roll memorbillia', mostly all signed by the artist. One particular piece caught my eye and after mulling it over I decided I had to get it. A beautifully framed guitar signed by Roy Orbison. It is being shipped to me - should have it here in about a week ! I am very excited !!!........ :blob:

OK, so do tell - how do you pull this off - every time, it seems!

And how's Michelle? She hasn't been checking in on us lately :( Should have told her we miss her!

It's official. We're all green with envy and hate you, jazzanddianafan. I'm kidding, of course. Along with sciele, I'm also wondering if perhaps you're dating DK's piano tuner...or sending Michelle flowers every day?

Anyway, thanks for the review. And yes, keeping track of the songs is extremely difficult. I try to write down one key word from the title at the end of each tune. But sometimes you forget.

Sounds like a great Vegas run. Hopefully we'll all get to see it on a live DVD.

Nice goin' on the Roy guitar. Are you gonna play it?

Let's just say I have been blessed with very nice and gracious friends and aquaintances and leave it at that..... and no, I am not going to play the guitar - it is very much just a neat collection piece to have.... you can get an idea of how well this place mounts and frames it's stuff by checking out the website....

Come on. You KNOW you want to break the glass and play an axe juiced with magic Roy mojo.

I've been to that store at the Aladdin. Beautiful stuff. Expensive.

I'd love to hear an album of children's music from Diana. I know after I started having kids, I started playing all kinds of typical children's songs for my kids on the piano and it was just such a joy to see how much they enjoyed it. Like many other parents, we'd sing to them while changing their diapers or lulling them to sleep. Those are some of my best memories!

Sunday June 17 concert report.

Postby sheltonphoto on 19 Jun 2007, 23:53

My wife and I finally got to see her on Sunday June 17th. It was my Fathers Day Present and My wifes birthday present. Wow. My wife was in tears when Diana walked out on stage. I had to swallow a lump in my throat. This was an experience we will never forget. This was our first time to see her in concert, and to have the full CHJO there made it even more amazing! I have to say that after seeing the CHJO in person, I am going to find their fan club and join it too! John Clayton conducts the orchestra with such an intensity. He knocked both lights off his music stand during the first song of the concert! So so cool. Later, Diana sang a song about fathers and said it was from the Marx Brothers, then said that it didn't go over too well when she sang it in grade school. Ha ha... We hope to someday meet her like jazzanddianafan got to. But like I told my wife, she has a long carreer ahead of her. I don't know what we would say if we got to meet her anyway... I hope she can come back to Salt Lake City for a show someday. The last time she came we wern't in the loop and the show sold out before we could get tickets.
On a sad note, I was disapointed in some of the people at the show who kept getting up and buying drinks, then comming back to their seats in front of me. Also some of the people were yelling out requests. She stopped and said, "Hey, This is my Show!" C'mon people! I literally drained my meager savings to be at this concert and there seemed to be a lack of respect for Diana and others trying to enjoy the show.
Again on a positive note, after the show, (her last show in Vegas) we saw a poster in the hotel lobby and the ushers said they would look the other way and they did. I am now having it framed.

Did you notice if the show was being filmed on Sunday ?.... I don't think it was on Friday and I only saw the one camera at the rear of the front middle section on Saturday.... if a DVD was in the works I would have expected to see several cameras.... but then what do I know about that sort of thing.....

The yelling out of requests has always bugged me.... one person behind me did that on Saturday.... obviously it takes a lot of time and effort to do arrangements and figure out the flow for a show and while I am sure they have some flexibility in song choices, they are not going to change stream just because someone happens to yell out a song title !! When it is just the trio I have seen her playing around on the piano while making up her mind which song to do and then leaning over to let everyone else in on the choice, but that gets much harder to do with the full CHJO sitting there. On Saturday night she mentioned that she almost called up John Cayton at 4am to add a song into the show, but thought better of it - maybe next time in Vegas, she said. I agree that John did a wonderful job on all the arrangements - not to mention playing one hell of a bass himself !

That's fun that you got to walk away with one of the posters from the show. I was kind of hoping to see Diana's name up in those big letters they used to use on the marquee like when Elvis was paying there, but they have gone to a big poster type of image now..... not to mention that Barry Manilow seems to be a permanent part of the marquee now !!

Hi,
I'm new to the forum but wanted to comment on the LV Hilton concert. Although performances are scheduled on the east coast, my husband and I flew from North Carolina to see and hear the beautiful lady along with the CHJO. The acoustics and sound equipment in the theatre were superb and you could hear all the special nuances in Diana's wonderful voice. It was absolutely perfect....except for the woman sitting across the aisle who was talking on her cell phone during CHJO's first number....and we look forward to hearing her again.

...saw one camera and hope there will be a DVD to enhance our memories of a very special evening. We had our picture taken in front of the stage with her piano in the background and it turned out great.

I look forward to reading more about her performances in the future.

Great to hear about the wonderful performance. Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear that you encountered people being disrespectful. That doesn't surprise me though, we here on dkfans probably have more respect and admiration than everyone else who considers themselves a Diana fan. How about the CHJO! Wow! I have to be honest, I loved their performance just as much as Dianas!!!! She has surrounded herself with the best.

Having Serious Fun With Jazz

Diana Krall reminds Jeff Hamilton and myself that when she was a
teenager, we used to drum into her (egad--the unintended puns are
starting already) the importance of keeping in sight that we "get" to
do this. There are so many people who don't have the opportunity to
express themselves with this music. As jazz lovers, we all love to
listen to it. As jazz artists, we have another kind of experience,
another component that keeps us marching.

A vital part of the experience is realizing that the fun that we have
is quite serious. It's still Fun. We can laugh, get silly, express
ourselves however we want, but it's as much serious as it is fun. In
order to perform on a high level, there's no way around learning
scales, chords, arpeggios, repertoire and transcribing. This has to
be done in healthy balance with performances, jamming, playing in
various ensembles, etc. It's all about the balancing act of knowing
when to have enough of all of the necessary ingredients.

I'm reminded of this Serious Fun bit because I just finished some
weeks with Diana and Jeff, Anthony Wilson and, for nearly a week in
Las Vegas, with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

As serious as I was, I couldn't stop smiling.
