July 20 – Apollo 40th Anniversary Celebratory Reception at NASM

Time: 7 p.m. (program begins at 8 p.m.) EDT

Description: Event will be a celebratory reception for approximately 2,000 invited guests, including current and former NASA employees, posthumously honoring President John F. Kennedy with the Ambassador of Exploration award.

Participants: Apollo 11 crew and the rest of the Apollo astronauts, the STS-125 space shuttle crew, and former Apollo employees.

Media: No press event is planned, but program will be broadcast on NASA TV and streamed at http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.

Thanks for the YouTube, scielle! Very cool that she's playing in the shadow of Columbia. I was standing right there the day before her performance.

Sure is disappointing that the video ended before she played East of the Sun (And West of the Moon)...

Thirsk also spoke about an upcoming Canadian visitor to the ISS: Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, who spent a reported $35 million for the opportunity.

Laliberte is scheduled to visit the space station at the end of September. Thirsk said an artist like Laliberte would better be able to communicate what it's like to live in space.

"Most of us have aviation or engineering or scientific or medical backgrounds, and you need to have these kinds of backgrounds to operate the technical systems and the payloads on board a space vehicle," said Thirsk.

"But I think as astronauts we have responsibilities to share these experiences with the public at home. I lack some of the artistic skills that Mr. Laliberte has, and I'm hoping he'll be able to communicate that experience of living and working in space."
