DK Concert in New York - WOW!

Postby laff on 27 Aug 2004, 22:45

Saw DK tues night in New York. My first DK concert. Seeing her live was incredible. Good thing for my bank account that NY was her last US concert, otherwise I might be following her all over. We had pretty good seats, about 25 rows from the stage, just to the left of center stage.

She wore a beautiful dress, she said she was going for the Carole Lombard look. She is even more beautiful in person than in picture.
Elvis was there, one section over from me, standing & talking to a group before the show started.

She said that she was very happy to be back in NY. She talked about when she first came to NY, she would go to Bradley's (which I assume is a jazz club), smoke cigarettes and drink strong wiskey.......in a Laura Ashley dress. That got a big laugh from the audience. Then she looked down at her dress & said maybe things haven't changed much. Another laugh. She talked about Jimmy Rowles and the story of his voice being like a canoe being drug across a road, & that she strived for that (another laugh from the audience). Said that Jimmy was the kind of guy that smoked in the shower (another laugh). Talked about Elvis being her favorite songwriter. At one point in the show someone yelled something that I couldn't make out (if anyone else that was there heard it let me know), and Diana's response was "Right church, wrong pew, Honey". I thought she interacted well with the audience. And I thought the audience was pretty responsive to solos.

Here is the playlist, except for the 1st 2 & the encores, the order isn't necessarily right.

I Just Freak Out
All or Nothing at All
East of the Sun
Devil May Care
Body and Soul (w/ just Anthony on guitar)
You Call it Madness
Stop This World
The Girl in the Other Room
Temptation
I'm Coming Through
Black Crow
Narrow Daylight
Abandoned Masquerade
'S Wonderful (Encore)
Frim Fram Sauce (Encore)
Departure Bay (Encore)

She messed up a little on Frim Fram Sauce & laughed in the middle of the song. Afterwards she said "I got a little nervous here in Radio City."

I thought the concert was fabulous & can't wait to see her again.

Laff:

Thank you for sharing your first DK show experience with us. I really enjoyed it. I think it's not usual to see Elvis Costello in DK's shows, he's also a very busy guy touring around the world. May be that's why Diana got nervous and messed up a little... but nobody would complain about that...

Regards

Armando

Agreed. It was an excellent show. I had *rappy seats but that in no way took away from my enjoyment of the show. Diana was definitely ON vocally, and was relatively chatty. The audience was OK - few solos got applause, but that doesn't surprise me; when you fill the 5-thousand strong Radio City Music Hall, you can't expect everyone to be a well-schooled jazz fan. Still, I think people in general were impressed by the breadth of talent and repertoire. As compared to the Montreal show earlier on in the summer, in this one Diana seemed to be having much more fun, though from a piano-playing perspective, Montreal came out on top, I think.

As for that reviewer who said Diana's too small for Radio City, I couldn't agree more with that review. Show was superb, DK and band were lovely, but it was not an arena show. But you see, the thing is, I don't want it to be an arena show. Leave it to Britney and Cher and other stars of that ilk to strut around the stage - I don't want Diana to be putting on some flashy MTV-style spectacle, I just want good music with honesty and a lot of heart - and Diana certainly knows how to deliver that. I'd rather she be herself and do what she does best, and not put on some fake show-girl performance. You can certainly tell she grew up playing clubs, and I for one prefer the club show to the arena extravaganza. She'd probably rather be playing clubs, too, but if you've got thousands of people out there wanting to see you she'd have to be playing somehting like 5 sets a day, every day... Geez, fame... Yeah, she's obviously awkward and shy standing up before a crowd and taking in the standing ovations, but that just makes her all the more lovable...

Anyhow, her voice was truly enchanting in NY. EC was on hand for the show, along with his mom. They were really chatting it up with some folks before the show. Oh, and he was doing MC duties for a hushed ( taped) band intro. Was cute. BTW, happy belated birthday to him (was on Aug. 25th). And yeah, he is a busy guy. Got not one, but two records coming out Sept. 21st. Word is he took mom out to see Boy From Oz on Broadway last Sat. and Hugh Jackman got him to come up on stage and do a number while everyone cheered. That's gotta be hard on them though, with her touring Europe shortly, while he's off to Australia...Anyhow, I wish them well.

I'd have to say Body and Soul and Temptation were my favourites - I just love what she does with the piano, and with her voice, on that piece. (Oh, and did I mention I saw Temptation-drummer-gal Terri Lynn Carrington earlier on in the week - well she was a blast too. Check out her work if you haven't already).

Cheers and happy weekend to all,

I'd love to hear her do Body and Soul live!

She seems to be digging deep into her repertoire during this tour, pulling things out of her songbook that she doesn't frequently perform. During the Mountain Winery concert, I was pleasantly surprised by P.S. I Love You...

Thanks for you reviews. There is nothing like seeing Diana live in concert for the first time - you just sit there in awe. It sounds like it was a great concert. I wish that she had play Frim Fram Sauce when I saw her, but oh well. I agree with Bud, hearing P.S. I love You was a pleasant surprise.
