Diana Krall, a protégé of old-school jazz masters such as Ray Brown and Claus Ogerman, drew the first sold-out McCallum gala in a recent era that has included such headliners as Jennifer Hudson, Diana Ross and Liza Minnelli.
By Monday evening there was a long waiting list to get into the 1,127-seat theater.
Krall not only helped raise almost $882,000 for McCallum programs — exceeding the McCallum board's goal by more than $30,000 — she brought down the house with her 45-piece orchestra.
Numbers such as “Do It Again,” “Let's Fall In Love” and the Lerner and Loewe classic “I've Grown Accustomed To His Face” showed off her sultry voice, which has made her the most popular jazz vocalist of her time.
Her opening song, “Love Being Here With You,” and Sergio Mendes' “So Nice” revealed her substantial jazz piano chops.
