The Kauffman Center will host back-to-back Grand Opening events to inaugurate its two new performance halls, bringing legends Placido Domingo and Itzhak Perlman to Kansas City on the evenings of Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17, 2011, respectively. Jazz sensation Diana Krall will join Mr. Perlman in the inauguration of Helzberg Hall at the Saturday evening event.

Symphony christens Helzberg Hall in high style

Krall’s opening number offered plenty of room for solos from her gifted sidemen, and she offered arresting renditions of “Love Letters” and Burt Bacharach’s “Look of Love.” For the finale she was joined by Perlman for a memorable version of “Fly Me To the Moon.” It was unusual pairing of artists but the results were lively. Perlman’s big sound seemed ideally matched to the jazz-pop classic.
