Tanglewood expands 2012's jazz, pop offerings
Tanglewood is stepping up its jazz and pop music summer programming, announcing new dates on Thursday in advance of the general public sale of tickets for the season.
The virtual box office opens this Sunday morning for all concerts in Tanglewood's 75th anniversary season that stretches for 10 weeks -- from June 22 until Labor Day, Sept. 3.
Following the demise of the traditional, annual Tanglewood Jazz Festival on the early September holiday weekend, the Boston Symphony has added performances by Chick Corea with Gary Burton and the Harlem String Quartet and the Christian McBride Trio for late-August slots in Ozawa Hall.
Previously announced dates include an eagerly awaited Shed performance by the Canadian jazz pianist and singer, Diana Krall, on Saturday, June 23, and trumpeter Chris Botti and his band in Ozawa Hall on Sunday, Aug. 5.
Krall has sold 6 million albums in the U.S. and 15 million worldwide, according to her website, and is a three-time Grammy Award winner. Botti, a frequent crossover guest with the Boston Pops, is known for fusing jazz and pop genres.
The Tanglewood Jazz Festival has been canceled because of slow ticket sales in recent seasons, but high-profile programming for the Labor Day weekend is expected to be announced when bookings are confirmed.
The best-available ticket sale that begins Sunday at 10 a.m. is through Tanglewood's website, http://www.tanglewood.org, and through SymphonyCharge at 1-888-266-1200.
