Wir haben alles perfekt vorbereitet, Hotel in der Nähe, Karten nicht liegen gelassen und waren frohen Mutes ein schönen Abend zu erleben. Meine schöne Begleitung hat uns Karten in der Reihe 38 besorgen können. Platz 1 und 2. Völlig abwegig es vorher zu wissen, aber es war ganz hinten. Es gab nur wenige, die noch hinter uns Platz nahmen. Wir hatten aber das Glück, dass nicht alle Plätze besetzt waren und hatten ein Platz im 20er Block, also ein ganzes Stück weiter vorne ergattert.

Die Bühne war Jazzkonzertmäßig bestückt: Piano (Steinway & Sons), Schlagzeug (Yamaha), Zwei Gitarren und ein Kontrabass. Warum ich das erwähne? Es gab in mir eine Vermutung, dass es Peter Erskine sein könnte, der den Abend am Schlagzeug begleitet. Peter hat einen Endorser, also Werbevertrag, mit Yamaha und gehört zu den wenigen, die sich wohl mit Jeff Hamilton (Der auch mit ihr auf Tour war und von der Firma REMO gesponsort wird) messen, wenn überhaupt. Nun, es gibt Zeugen die bestätigen können, dass ich es vorher wußte und ich bezeuge, dass es keinerlei Prospekt gab, wo es hätte ersichtlich werden können, das der gute alte Peter Erskine trommelt. Was im Normalfall zu einer sehr hohen Erwartung führt. Den Peter ist ein hervorragender Jazztrommler. Christian McBride (Bass) und Anthony Wilson (Gitarre) haben aber in keinster Weise nachgestanden.
Nun, er war aber, das muss man geschehen nicht der einzige Profi am Werk.
Das Konzert begann pünklich mit einer (vom Band) Ansage "Ladies and Gentlemen - Miss Diana Krall". Was nicht der letzte Höhepunkt der Show war. In der Grugahalle in Essen, wo wir die Show sahen, war ein schönes Forum. Für ein Jazzkonzert zu gross, aber dafür war die Bühne aktiv beleuchtet und der Sound (purer verstärkter Bühnensound) hervorragend.

Diana Krall, sprechen wir nicht über ihren mintgrünen Strickponcho, hat wie es zu erwarten war eine gute Klavier und Gesangsperformance hingelegt. Ihre Stimme ist brilliant, klar und präsent. Man hat das Gefühl das wenn sie uns zwischen den Stücken etwas erzählte, dass sie uns sehr nahe war, eine bezaubernde Stimme. Die Songauswahl war der Tourplatte angelehnt, unter anderem der Titelsong der Tour und ihrer letzten CD "The girl in the other room" und "Narrow daylight". Ergänzent kamen noch drei Stücke von Tom Waits zum Vorschein, welche manche Zuschauer nicht überascht, aber begeisterte.

Diana begann mit ihrer Bühnenkarriere mit ca. Zwölf Jahren und ist jetzt, wie von ihr bemerkt, seit zwei Jahren im Gange (Scherz). Es ist schon ein wenig länger. Auch ihren Ehemann Elvis Costello ließ sie nicht unerwähnt und antwortete auf einen Zuruf "You're great!" mit der Bemerkung, ob jemand auch diese erwähnte Greapfruit sehen würde, sie würde sie nicht sehen. Also alles im Allem eine charmante und musikalisch perfekte Performance, die gar nichts vermissen ließ. Nicht mal ein locker eingeschmissenes Weihnachtslied sollte fehlen. Das ging dann, mit der Verwunderung der MUsiker auf der Bühne, glücklicherweise in den nächsten Song über.

Ich kann nur empfehlen, wenn es in euren Herzen ein Platz für Jazz gibt. Dann schaut euch das Konzert "Live in Paris" auf DVD an. Dort zeigt die gebürtige Kanadierin ihr können auf imposante Art und Weise. Ich persönlich warte auf die Lieferung der DVD "Live at the Montreal Jazz-Festival".
