THE TRANSCENDENT MOMENT OF SURRENDER

Musicians and actors strive for that moment ~ that moment when they become one with the song that they are singing or the character that they are playing.

I have experienced this moment as a singer and actor but I witnessed two excellent examples this past week;

Diana Krall in concert in Sonoma when she touched that moment playing and singing " Little Girl Blue " . From Paul Clayborne's first base notes I know this was a ' happening ' and by the time she finished it ~ tears were streaming down my cheeks.
Diana knew it also and after the last note she paused and slowly murmured " That's a great song ". She had become one with the song.

Ah... that's so cool. I actually felt like that through most of the concert. Diana was in top form that night. I almost broke down in tears during Boulevard of Broken Dreams. She was so great.

I would love to have heard Diana sing "Little Girl Blue" at that concert. I'm a little envious of those who did, but also very glad for you. It sounded like such a terrific concert, especially if someone was so moved to tears by her rendition. But maybe it will be on an upcoming record. Just curious...did she start out singing with the introduction, "When I was young...etc." or did she cut to the main part of the song?

After reading the posts on "Little Girl Blue" I dug out the versions I have from Karen Carpenter and Carly Simon. On the Carly Simon album, I was reviewing her liner notes, and they mention that at one time, Carly Simon wanted to be a jazz singer. Going off on a tangent, CS is coming out with a new record in July. I hear it's a standards album. I think CS paved the way in the early 1980s for popular musicians to do standards with her "Torch" album. (She's another person on my very short list of people I'd like to meet in person and ask for autographs--besides DK.)
