Cities and pronounciations

I open a new topic regarding the cities and their pronunciations...
Detroit (deh-tro-ah), Montreal (mon-reh-al), what next?

I've got a question: for god's sake, why do you pronounce the final "S" in Paris?
Someone remembers how we correctly say Nanaimo?

I must say that in croatian we are pronouncing Paris with the Z!!!

And Nanaimo is NANAIMO....

HA HA! Well, because unless you know any French, you would pronounce it like what it looks like In English. I know better though.... took a few years of French, although I am rusty.

And Detroit will always be Dee- troy-te to me LOL ( ooh that was bad phnetic spelling)

How about everyone else says Or- e- gone, when us natives here say Orygun. Drives me nuts when you hear someone from the East coast say it Ore-eh -gone.....

I'm from NY and I say Or-eh-GON and PariSS. I only know how to say Nanaimo because I've listened to Diana say it a hundred times. As for other well known cities... I don't think anyone outside of the city has problems, but it's New YORK not New YAWK.

It drives me NUTZ when I hear someone call my beloved city "Frisco". May I also add that "San Fran" is never appropriate either.

And by the way, the English pronounciation of Montreal does have a t in there.

Angelique: I'm guilty of writing "Frisco" in one of my posts. I had no idea it was such a faux pas/foible/my bad! By the way, which is it such a dreaded word?

Jeralee: I didn't understand how you Oregonites (?) pronounce Oregon. Is it like o-RIGGIN? I accentuate the OR syllable. And do you actually say "Oregonites" for Oregon residents?

In Michigan it's weird, because the official term for Michigan residents in Michiganians (pronounced "Mish-ih-GAIN-ih-ahns") but most of us say "Michiganders." Maybe it's because we see so many Canada geese flying here. And then there are the snow birds (Michigan residents who winter in Florida) and the fudgies (people from the south who summer in Michigan). That term comes from the fudge that you can buy when you take a summer trip to Mackinac Island.

If you live in Oregon, you are an Oregonian. We say OR-ee-gun ( emphasis on the first syllabal, and said quickly) - I hope that makes sense.

I have heard many people from back east, reporters and such say Or -e- GONE, like Lindsay mentioned.
