Tsunami in S.E. Asia - Links to associations added

Postby harpfingers on 30 Dec 2004, 18:41

I have been away from the boards a bit lately, on vacation, but was surprised that no one has started a topic on the Tsunamis. I feel sad and sick for those that lost their lives. I guess death toll is up to 115,000 now. I just saw my older brother this last weekend at my parent's house. He had recently returned from a two week stay in Thailand - got back the first week of December. He spent some time in Bangkok and a week in Phuket, on Patong Beach. He also did some diving in the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock. He also mentioned that they had just missed a tropical storm that swept through the Richelieu Rock where they had been diving the day before. He is having a really hard time with the news and what has gone on over there. It is eerie to think that he just missed disaster by a few weeks.

Maybe no one has posted because it is just so hard to comprehend and so unbelievably sad. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people -pictures of people carrying their small children out of a watery grave... If not for the heroic efforts of others, many more people would have been lost. I don't think I have any words. Prayers of course -but not words.

[Prayers of course--but not words.]

"...with groanings which cannot be uttered" is the only way I can pray about the tsunami victims: the dead, the missing, the survivors. My heart goes out to them all. I realize how powerless we are in the face of such natural disasters. May I suggest we donate to an aid organization for disaster relief. It may seem like so little, but it could mean more than we realize.

I've already donated a some cash for relief efforts. It feels like so little, though, in the face of such great tragedy.

Thanks for starting this thread Jeralee. The magnitude of this disaster is really beyond comprehension. We've seen major earthquakes cause massive devastation such as in Bam, Iran last year, but there is something about the scope of the tsunamis that is hard to digest.

I made a donation to the Red Cross through the Amazon link too: http://www.amazon.com Sending money hardly seems adequate, but its the best thing to do at this point. If you want to donate to an organization other than the Red Cross, I noticed Apple has listed some alternatives: http://www.apple.com

May 2005 be better than 2004...

12 days later, and its still so numbing...I can't remember ever crying at watching a newscast, but I certainly did in those few days after the 26th...

A Canadian relief concert is planned for Vancouver on Jan. 29th and Calgary on Jan. 31st. - I understand the first of these is to be broadcast on CTV.

Elvis starts tour in Sweden

Elvis starts his tour tonight with this thoughtful comment -

" I understand a lot of Swedes suffered when the Tsunami hit Asia, and
I feel a bit awkward flying into Stockholm with a: "Hey, let´s rock and
roll", but music can be helpful when you´re trying to find your way
back to your life, and we will give our contribution to that".
