I purchased used two CD's from Amazon. On Pandora Radio, I heard samples of "Something Cool" with Tierney Sutton and "Still Life" with Lynn Bush. Have any of you listened to the Ultimate Shirley Horn CD? She sings songs requested by Diana Krall. Shirley Horn has passed, but oh my, what an important influence she was to those great women jazz singers that have followed in her footsteps. Diana has mentioned her often.

Hi, Char.

Yes, I have the "Ultimate Shirley Horn" CD with songs selected by Diana. It's a wonderful collection, and I also love Diana's liner notes for the album. I think they're very revealing about Diana, not to mention Shirley Horn.

I also have the "Here's to Life" CD of Shirley Horn's. The orchestration was done by Johnny Mandel...which I think influenced Diana on the WILIYE album.

I just saw Dave Brubeck and Ramsey Lewis live and have been listening to some of thier CDs..... Bruebeck - at 87, was a bit frail getting to the piano; but once he sat down he and his group were fantastic !!...... and Ramsey Lewis - at a mere 73 - brought the house to it's feet 3 times in his set......

A great night of music !!!

The Look of Love album - Diana Krall

When I knew Diana I would not listen this album, don't know why I love it now and did not like before.
Great songs so romantic mixed with the amazing Diana's voice and piano.

Don't Know Why last times I'm in love for slow songs. What if I was make a new list of "favorites Diana's songs", certainly it will be changed if compared with my old tastes.

Even though I like slow songs songs I keep my adoration for the fast and happy songs and I'm listening as well lots of Jamie Cullum's songs.

Lately, it's been "The Look of Love" by Diana, James Taylor's Greatest Hits, Carly Simon's Greatest Hits, and The Origin of Fire by Hildegard von Bingen.

i know most of us are probably listening to DK's latest.

i've been listening to a lot of 3 people in the past couple of months, pretty much non-stop obsessivly.

Patty Griffin-of course probably the big mama of all singer-songwriters. my god...this woman can tell a story about anything, or anyone. one of the best writers out there, absolutely. love pretty much near every album...if i have to pick maybe it'd be "living with ghosts", or "impossible dream". seeing her live is an UNREAL experience.

Missy Higgins-love love looooove this australian cutie! I met her on friday after a gig. so pleasent, gracious, and talented out the wazoo. it's unreal the depth this 24 year old can come up with in her songwriting. her latest album "on a clear night" is a must listen. all tracks are good, no duds on this.

Ryan Adams- NOT to be confused with Bryan Adams....Ryan has since recently "retired", and went off and married mandy moore...i question his personal decisions. but eh..he can effin' write! since he's become sober, he's a lot more pleasent to see live, or watch and interview of. absolutley loving the new album "cardinology", but i have to say my favorite "heartbreaker". god i love that album...listen to "come pick me up". it'll mess you up for a few days at least.

anyone else got some goodies to share?? or re-share?

I'm listening a new one (for me):

Jane Monheit: She was the first runner-up in the 1998 Theolonius Monk Institute vocal competition, winning a $10,000 scholarship to further her musical education. Judges couldn't exactly place her sound, which blended natural elegance with potent yet impressively controlled presentation, and by 2000 Monheit had joined Diana Krall as one of the highest-touted female talents in jazz.

I've recently been studying Dmitri Shostakovich. I heard a lecture on CD by Prof. Robert Greenberg about DS that was at my local library, which got me interested in the composer and his life. I am particularly fond of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony.

The music is great, to be sure, but I'm also fascinated by the debate about Shostakovich who appeared to be a strong Communist during his lifetime but, after his death, was revealed to have been doing whatever he could within the oppressive Russian system to stay alive and to continue making great art. The debate was fueled by a book authored by Solomon Volkov called "Testimony", from which Greenberg's lecture quotes extensively. It is allegedly based on interviews Volkov had with Shostakovich in which the composer wanted to set the record straight about his life, and it countered so much of what people outside of Russia had thought they knew about him. I have checked out a book entitled "Shostakovich and Stalin" by Volkov to learn more about this.
