...this month since I first saw DJK live.

December 10, '98. Atlanta's "Variety Theatre".

No orchestra.

No pop-star trappings.

No assigned seating, even.

What a show; two long sets full of material from "Love Scenes", "All for You", and a few tunes from "When I look in Your Eyes",
which was released six months later.

I remember leaving the humble venue, going out for drinks with my buddy and remarking that what we'd just seen likely wouldn't or couldn't
be replicated.

This woman was going places.

Sure enough, by the next time I saw her, in DC-'00-things had changed, she'd just bagged her Grammy for "When I Look in Your Eyes",
and was playing to sold-out venues worldwide.

Subsequent shows were much the same; and I certainly don't mean to diminish the passion and talent she and her band put into each.

But-there was something special about seeing her in a tiny hole-in-the wall "on her way up"...

Isn't it funny how you can just tell someone is going to make it big? Thanks for the memory!

I look back on 1998 with embarrassment

I missed a chance to see her play at DC's cozy jazz venue, Blues Alley, but didn't go. I wasn't quite a Superfan yet (a legimate designation, bestowed on me by my wife) but I was already taken by All for You.

I really like her minimalist performances too, and look forward to the day when she does a complete album where she is alone with her piano.

It was close to 10 years ago that I remarked to my wife that I might like to go see a new jazz singer playing in Kitchener Ontario, but for one reason or another didn't happen I always look back and say it was a chance to see her in a smaller venue and the opportunity to get good seats. The CDN tour announced today lists Centre in the Square, Kitchener as one of the shows...... my wife said we're going even before I had the chance to even mention the idea. ...
