Wow, Bud, what an interesting thread. Thanks for giving us a peak into what's "tweeting" about Diana. It's a whole new forum of sorts.

Hi, Coda -- Its fun that given the way everything works, these are random tweets and most of these people are unlikely to know of the others. That is, unless they've set up searches like mine.

More to follow...

OK, I completely don't get Twitter. What's the point? I really could care less - honestly, who's got the time to read other people's (mostly incomprehensible) 140-character thoughts?
I facebook, and flickr, and youtube and LinkedIn - but Twitter I just don't understand. (Why bother when you can just update your facebook status? If one were to keep one's life up-to-date on all these sites one wouldn't have any time for a life. Perhaps that's the problem with my generation...)

I know, scielle, this doesn't make any sense at all! Its one of those things that's hard to understand unless you've tried it, and even then it can be a mystery.

Microblogging (or even "lazy blogging) is a pretty good description. If you follow a number of conventional blogs, and check them regularly, its kind of like checking tweets. However, the tweets are strictly limited in length, and get pushed to you in a steady stream. Because they are so short, they can come pretty fast, and some of them even begin to resemble haiku. The only tweets you see are those from people you voluntarily choose to follow. You can also search tweets, and there are other ways to filter the stream you see.

I understand that there may be some demographic issues at work here. Twitter tends to have a slight older population than some other social media activities.

Maybe I should leave it to Ev Williams, Twitter co-founder, to try to explain it. Here's his talk at last month's TED conference:

Perhaps I should have been clearer. I understand it, have even signed up and used it once or twice at other people's urging, but I don't understand the attraction. If I'm going to spend time reading a blog, I'd like it to be a cohesive set of thoughts - I'm afraid unless you're Oscar Wilde or the like, you really can't say much worth reading in the space of 140 characters. 95% of what's there is pointless mush.
