The Lost of Dave Brubeck

The great jazz pianist, Dave Brubeck, died Dec. 5th, 2012 at 91. He was one day short of his 92nd birthday on Dec. 6th. He suffered a cardiac arrest. Hearing Dave was the beginning of my love of jazz. He was a gifted talent and a fine human being.

Yes, a true legend in the world of jazz is gone, and it's a great loss for the world. I was fortunate to see him perform a couple of times at the Playboy Jazz Festival. Interesting how his date of death is also that of another rather famous composer, separated by 221 years - Wolfgang A. Mozart, died 12/5/1791. Mozart was the master of human emotion directly translated into music....Brubeck was the master of jazz composition that broke convention and opened new possibilities.....RIP &

I was listening to NPR's retrospective on Dave Brubeck. He wanted to be a cattle rancher, and his Mom taught him and his sibs some classical piano when they were kids. His parents wanted him to go to college, and he started out for veterinary school, but one of his instructors told him he really belonged in the music conservatory program across the diag! He managed to get by without reading music until his last year, when he finally had to take piano. He almost got kicked out of the program, but some of his earlier music instructors told the dean Brubeck had talent, so they convinced the dean to let him graduate if he'd promise never to teach (and bring disgrace to the college that let him pass without knowing how to read music).

I am sorry I have not been on the site lately, but I wanted to add my sorrow at the passing of Dave Brubeck.... I had the pleasure of seeing him and Ramsey Lewis here in Eugene, OR in 2008. It was a wonderful show !..... he was obviously a great talent that will be missed......

In an interesting sidenote, I found out that the nurse that checks my blood each month is a relative of Dave's and was at the same show.... she was going to go backstage and say hi to Dave after, but he was on stage first and by the time the show was over was already back in his room asleep .....

I do love that we can still enjoy his music and talent..... as you all have said, RIP, Dave.....
