Sad news  Fortunate that Diana was able to share special time with him at the Apollo 11 40th anniversary celebration.

Jazz musician Diana Krall salutes Neil Armstrong with ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ during LA concert

LOS ANGELES — Diana Krall knows how to pay tribute to Neil Armstrong.

The jazz singer-pianist tenderly played “Fly Me to the Moon” during a Saturday night concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Krall said she once was lucky enough to share a glass of wine with the first man to walk on the moon. The astronaut died Saturday at 82.

Armstrong probably was wishing he didn’t have to listen to the pop standard again, Krall said lightly, after gazing toward the night sky.

Yes, her tribute to him Saturday night was a moving moment....I was in section D, stage left that night....GREAT SHOW!!!! (I was in section G, center, for her show on Friday night, and 2nd row, center for her show at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Sunday....3 days in a row of DK, and it's still not enough!!!! )

BTW, I haven't been on this board in several years, and I'm so glad I found it again....my old user data still works! :D

Hi Jim - Welcome back to the board!!!

Three consecutive for DK concerts may be a record for board members! Awesome!

I've seen her two nights in a row, but never three.

Hi Bud - Yeah, all hell broke loose in my life the day after I posted the Jazz Math post on my b-day in 2005 (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=631). My brother dropped dead of a heart attack at age 53 (my current age) on 7/16/05, then my mom at 83 (degenerative lung disease) on 10/17/06, then my sister at 60 (breast cancer) on 4/8/10, and my dad at 91.5 years on 3/5/12....in less than 7 years, I've lost my entire family, as well as losing my job on my birthday last year that I'd had since 2004. I'm dealing with my dad's estate stuff which will probably go on for as much as another year due to its complexity...thankfully I have an excellent attorney in Baltimore who's handling the legal aspects.

So that's what's been going on. One good thing that I did during that time frame was learn how to fly an airplane....something that I'd wanted to do for a long time, as it's in my blood (my dad got his license during WWII, uncles on both sides were pilots, cousins are pilots....it runs, or should I say, flies in the family!)

Anyway, in 2009 my sister and I saw Diana four times during that summer - in June, in Baltimore at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall from 4th row seats, quartet only, then in August my sister visited me here in Malibu and we saw Diana both nights at the Hollywood Bowl, then drove up to Santa Barbara to see her the following night - the first time for 3 nights in a row!

When I found out Diana was going to be swinging by this area again this summer, I did the same thing - 3 nights in a row, with two of those being the VIP seating nights, the best being on Sunday - 2nd row, center at Santa Barbara Bowl - AMAZING!

I'm remembering back to the shows I've seen.....

Mother's Day Weekend, 2002 @ Universal Amphitheater (now the Gibson Amphitheater) - first time seeing her, and WHOA!!!!!
Santa Barbara Bowl, August 2002
Greek Theater, July 2004, both nights (first time my sister saw her, and she was blown away!)
Hollywood Bowl, August 2007, both nights (w/my sister visiting)
The four 2009 shows listed above (w/my sister, a month before her breast cancer diagnosis)
The three shows from last weekend

.....I can't remember if I saw her between 2004 and 2007, or if she did a tour during that time....if she did, I saw her, but I can't find any tickets, which I always save! One thing I can say is that from now on whenever she does a 3-night set around here, I'm going to go to all three shows, and do the VIP thing at Santa Barbara to get the BEST seats!

Off topic - hey, are Remi and ViolinSkirt still around here?

Anyway, it's great to be back here among all of us who love Mrs. Costello! (No doubt, Elvis won THE lottery!)

Hi ND -

No, I didn't keep any set lists...I was way too much into the moment of each piece to do that, you know?! I saw you posted a link to a torrent site of her show on Saturday with that set list. I do remember her Friday night show had a couple of different tunes than on Saturday, but I cannot recall what they were.....

Sunday night's show was completely different except for 4 tunes from both her H-wood Bowl shows. It was absolutely great seeing the quartet perform from the 2nd row, in the center....they were about 30 feet away from me, I think, and I was able to see and hear everything that was going on....they were absolutely stunning in their performance.

Elvis held Dexter on his lap for most of the show, off at stage right. Dexter even introduced Diana as "MOMMY!" and walked out with her on stage at the beginning, to the delight of the crowd. Right after they absolutely BURNED through "Devil May Care" (at an even faster, totally insane tempo than from the L.I.P. DVD), I shouted out, "Nice chops, you all!" and all four of them cracked up. At one point, Diana was talking about both Dexter and Frank, and said that Frank was back in the bus, probably playing cards, smoking cigars, and having kaluha and milk, hahaha! Great stuff...I love her sense of humor and her quick wit....all part of her great improvisational mind that I love about her!

Diana was flighting off a head cold on Sunday, though....and I'll bet she got it after the show on Saturday....she said during that show that there was a "lovely cool breeze here tonight....right on me" as she put on her jacket, and later said how cold her hands were from it. I hope she's taking good care of herself this week to knock that cold OUT! She still sang and played great on Sunday, as if it didn't matter!

When they ended and stood at the front of the stage, Dexter ran out and jumped up in Diana's arms....really great! (I recorded that moment on my iPhone). He also came back out with her for their encore....somebody in the audience yelled out for him to play the drums, hahaha....again, great stuff, and it was truly a family affair....at one point she said, "It's like I'm playing in your living room...only you have to pay a lot more!" She has a way of making everyone in the audience, no matter how big the crowd, feel as though they're playing "just for you", you know?

Something that happened after the show, and that I'm kicking myself for not doing - Robert Hurst came back out on stage to put his bass in its case, and he was well within ear-shot of me....I thought about saying something to him, but decided not to....I've been regretting it ever since, because it may have been possible to have met everyone backstage had I said something/started a conversation with him! :sigh: I may not get that opportunity again.... I hope I will get to meet them all one day.....

So, it was a truly great weekend of high quality music, three nights running! (....and I truly LOVE Mrs. Costello  )

I would also guess three in a row is the record. Two consecutive is tops for me as well.

Thanks for the story on the Santa Barbara gig, Jim. Very cool.

As for keeping a set list, I've said it before, it's extremely difficult. I bring one piece of paper and a pen. At the end of each tune, I scribble down one word: Deed, Frim, Quiet, Exactly, etc. You might try it...or not. Sometimes it's cool to look back through all the sets from my past DK concerts.

Hi, Jim.

Great anecdotes from the show! Thanks...and how cool is it to have your Mom play the piano on stage and when she's done, you get to jump into her arms!

:D

By the way, here's my new opinion of the "provocative" cover on Glad Rag Doll! You go, girl!

(Thinking of that Natalie Cole song...with a little tweak in the lyrics..."I can hold my kid, play the piano and wear a little thingy on my new album cover...I'm a Woman...W-O-M-A-N!"

Jim -- Sorry to hear about your family. Glad to hear that you've landed on your feet, and even learned to fly! I'm sure it's been rough, though.

VS signed off long ago and hasn't returned. Remi is definitely still around, though. He was right on top of the GRD cover, and was the first to post the pic!!!

You were at Meyerhoff a couple of years ago? So was I! I was there this year too. You know how the area was run down, with a lot of old empty shops? Those have been torn down, and replaced with modern housing. It's a lot nicer, with decent restaurants right across the street from Meyerhoff.

Hi Mapache61,

Thanks for the set list suggestion....I think I'll try your idea the next time she's around here, which will hopefully be next summer, as Glad Rag Doll is to be released in less than a month, and she'll just HAVE to do a tour to promote it! ;)

Hi Coda,

Yeah, Dexter and Frank are fortunate to be in a family of cool people, no doubt! And yeah, agreed on Diana's cover shot for GRD...YUM! I do love that woman.....as *improper* as it is  But Elvis :marriage is the lucky one!

Hi Bud,

Yeah, it's been a time of testing my metal....it's very strange....hard to explain in words. Wonder where VS went....she was instrumental (haha) in getting the site together along with Remi....glad to know he's still here....Hey Remi, comment ca va?

Yup, my sister and I were at the Meyerhoff in June 2009, in the 4th row a little to Diana's right....it was my usual visit back to Baltimore the week after the school year ended (the school is gone now, after a 55+ year run....very very sad situation!) I didn't get back to Baltimore this past June until the week after DK was there, unfortunately....arrived just as the hell-on-earth Baltimore Summertime Slop weather started, so I missed her show there....how was it? (I'm sure excellent....quartet only?)

And yes, I do remember the surrounding area....went to Blues Alley across the street a few times back in the day, as well as numerous Baltimore Opera performances at the Lyric Theatre when I was a BOC member...(sad that they had to close it down a few years ago for lack of funds)....glad the area has been rejuvenated. (I used to drive past Meyerhoff upon my arrival into Baltimore, as well as on my departure back to KBWI airport from visiting my parents.....don't go that way anymore since they're both gone now....I go 695 to Towson and head north out to my brother in law's house, which was my sister's....)

Diana with John Glenn at Neil Armstrong's memorial service. There are other pictures of her in the photo stream, so be sure to check those too!

How did she get a seat in the same row as Buzz Aldrin and John Glenn? I just caught a short piece about it on the NBC Evening News, and she sang [you know what] at the service. They briefly showed her performance.
