LEEUWIN Estate’s famed annual concert was off to a great start on Saturday, with tickets sold out to a huge number of people.

Perth Symphony Orchestra took to the stage first, followed by James Morrison who warmed the crowd with anecdotes about his first impressions of the trombone. As a special guest, he showcased his inspiring skills on various instruments before jazz songstress Diana Krall stepped out for a soothing headline performance on the piano.

Ms Krall chatted to her audience often, about her seven-year-old twin sons and a song that reminded her of her husband Elvis Costello. She also joked that mums should fill their bathtubs with gin for a well-deserved break.

At one stage, she humorously dedicated a song to a bug she squished on stage.

“Hang on, there’s an insect up here. I’m going to have to set this right,” she said before singing I Was Doing All Right with a twist on the lyrics. “He was doing alright, til I came by.”

Highlights included Ms Krall’s cover of Simple Twist of Fate by Bob Dylan and Let it Rain, which she adapted from a song written for the ukulele.

Later, James Morrison returned for his Motown Revisited show filled with favourites such as Baby Love and You Can't Hurry Love.

While some people dressed to the nines for an evening of lush entertainment, others settled in with their picnic rugs further from the stage.
