STAR SIGHTINGS . . . On the other Big Island full of Alaskans. Dennis and Stephanie McMillian called in from the First Friday shindig in Hilo to report sitting a few tables away from superstar Elvis Costello and his wife, jazz singer Diana Krall, at a Waimea restaurant.

So THAT'S where she posted from! I can see it now... Bright sunny day... warm breeze off of the beach... cabana boys (I mean husbands) nearby, margaritas with little umbrellas... and a laptop. Sounds like a vacation to me! :alcohol:

Wouldn't that be something !!??...... you are having a nice meal at a hawaii get-away and you look over and see Diana & Elvis at the next table !!!......

You paint a very interesting picture, Lindasy !!....... I still find it extraordinary that Diana even recieved and opened our greetings.... much less that she took time out to respond !!

I am not sure i buy that you mean 'husbands' by the term 'cabana boys'.... but that's a whole different subject....

Okay, Diana and Elvis: eat your hearts out...we went sledding over the weekend! That'll make you leave your balmy breezes and warm sandy beaches and jump on the first plane headed to Michigan!

BTW, jazzanddianafan...how are you holding up there in California?

It has been really mild up here in Oregon for the most part. Last week it was so cold and dry, my hair was all static! I was glad when we did get a couple of days of rain. But on the whole, it isn't as wet as it usually is.

If faced with such a situation, what would you do???

I certainly wouldn't want to disturb their private time, but I also wouldn't want to pass up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet them. I think I'd wait if possible until they were done, then maybe briefly try to interact with them on their way out. If I were done first, I'd have to make an on the spot decision.

Michelle, if you read this, any hints on what might be a preferred approach? Being hounded by those who recognize them as celebrities is one thing, but we're members of Rémi's board!

It's actually a great question. I never really thought about this unitl I had the pleasure of dining out with an actor once and he was interrupted throughout our entire dinner, so much so that he could barely take a mouthful before someone came up to him. It's awfully awkward to talk to someone when your mouth is full and what if you have parsley between your teeth? So, his meal got cold and he couldn't really enjoy eating it anyway with all of the interruptions. He was extremely gracious, though. I think it is polite to wait until everyone at the table is finished eating before stopping by to say hello.

Looks like their vacation was more fun than mine! I'll just be glad to get out of this surgical boot and be able to splash water on my right foot again!

But aren't they such a cute family?

Are we sure that's Diana?
Looks an awful lot like that nanny from the HSBF concert pictures:

i think you may be right Scielle. She does look alot like the nanny in the other photo. Look at her sunglasses? And I was wondering about the hair color?

scielle, you may be right! The sunglasses look the same as what the nanny wore on the other thread of pictures. Such good sleuthing!

Facing the famous, lost for words - Tongue-tied during a chance tropical encounter with Diana Krall
Debby Waldman
The Edmonton Journal
16 January 2009

Last week I was walking near a beach in Hawaii with my husband when I noticed two very cute toddlers.

"I think they're twins," I said, although it was hard to tell because they weren't standing near each other. They were scouting out the front lawn of a condo complex across from the beach, like explorers determined to make a discovery.

One was headed in my direction. He was animated, observant, focused intently on something at his feet. I was fascinated with how busy and chatty he was. It was like watching a very short, inarticulate play-by-play announcer. I tried to figure out what he was saying, but it was incomprehensible.

His mother, who was following closely behind him, noticed me staring.

"Are they twins?" I asked.

"Yes," she replied.

"How old are they?" I asked.

"Two," she said.

I smiled at her. She studied me from behind dark glasses. Nothing unusual about that. We were in sunny Hawaii, after all.

But then I realized this was no ordinary mother of toddlers. It was Diana Krall.

Here I should point out that I am not very good at recognizing people from pictures. Were it up to me to find the children whose faces appear on milk cartons, they'd remain lost forever. Also, I tend not to trust myself when I think I'm seeing someone well-known.

It's not as if I get a lot of practice in Edmonton. But I knew I was right this time, because a few nights earlier I'd attended a talk about DNA and forensics (my husband was in Hawaii for a conference), and in the course of discussing identical twins and their identical DNA, the speaker had mentioned that Diana Krall and Elvis Costello and their twin boys were staying nearby.

Had I not heard the talk, I wouldn't have had the slightest clue who I was speaking to. But now I was faced with a conundrum: should I continue what I'd intended as a casual chat with another mother? Confess that I knew who she was? Or just wish her a nice day and leave?

[...]

It did occur to me to say something nice to Diana Krall about her music, but the truth is, I'm not familiar with her music. I'm an Elvis Costello fan, and he was standing at the other end of the lawn, staring (or, more likely, glaring) at me. I couldn't bring myself to say, "Are you Diana Krall?" I already knew the answer.

And so I looked down at her son, who was still commentating about the grass, and asked what I'd been wondering all along: "What's he saying?"

"More coconuts," she replied.

That, of course, raised further questions. But I'd asked enough. I wished her a nice day, and left.
