New Jazz Star on the Horizon - Anna Maria Jopek

Postby smooth_jazz_ on 06 Apr 2005, 21:38

One of the best Polish singers, classically trained pianist, writer, composer, producer & arranger - Anna Maria Jopek has just arrived from Africa and she starts to promote her new release (small tour in Germany). "Secret" is AMJ's debut in Universal Music London, and international version of her Polish album "Nienasycenie" (on "Secret" song "Insatiable"). Jazz, pop, Polish folk, Slavic R&B & all the best from electronic- it's unique sound of her music. On "Secret" you can hear songs by Sting and No Doubt ("A Thousand Years", "Don't Speak") in incredible new versions ("Don't Speak" like bossa nova/ lullaby!).

Pat Metheny said at the press conference when their album "Upojenie" went Gold on the day of its release: Anna is original, unique, different. She's brave, she's modest, she's open. She's a great musician. What she's been doing all her life is just trying to play the best notes. Trying to sound good. In that particular sense she's a lot like me and that's why I decided to work with her. Because she just cares for the music!

After "Barefoot" and "Upojenie" with Pat Metheny new Anna Maria Jopek's album "Secret"! Date of release: end of May 2005!

Can we call her "A Wind from the East"?

It looks like the record company is going to play up her good looks. Where have we seen that before? (Yeah, yeah, I know: DK controls her image. Still . . .)

I'm sorry, but did I just read a musical style described as "Slavic R&B"?!? :eek

A Wind from the East- maybe...

It looks like the record company is going to play up her good looks

Oh, I don't think so... Anna starts from Eurovision with jazz song. Two years ago she recorded extraordinary album with Pat Metheny, but record company decided to release it only in Poland. Anna isn't "star", she don't like fame and publicity, she's one from artist like Ella Fitzgerald.

I'm certain- album "Secret" satisfy even very demanding listeners!

I'm sorry, but did I just read a musical style described as "Slavic R&B"?!? :eek

Slavic R&B... In Poland R&B is "trendy" now, we have many new R&B musician- Sistars, Monika Brodka & others. It's R&B with "passionate Slavic touch" (Gazeta Wyborcza about Anna Maria Jopek's international album "Barefoot", released by Emarcy) ;)

"Slavic R&B" seems like an ozymoron. R&B is an African-American style. Saying "Slavic R&B" is like saying "American Polonaise" or "Mexican Mazurka."

Why not? Chopin are going to write Bolero-Polonaise, Bach wrote Polonaises in German style... So why not Slavic R&B? You should listen Monika Brodka (especially), I find some of her mp3 for you. It's R&B mixed with Polish music, very good!
