Huge catastrophe... is now over!

Postby Rémi on 20 May 2005, 14:41

Hi everyone,

I'm writing to you directly from the University where I am working. I explain you why :
Yesterday, due to an incident with our energy supplier, we had a high-voltage at my house and some of my neibourghs.
Consequently, we didn't have eletric power during all the afternoon and night, waiting for the guys from the EDF (Electricité de France) to repair... but that was not the major problem...

The main problem is that the high-voltage destroyed a lot of domestic appliances such as :
- the washing machine - dead;
- the micro-wave - dead;
- an old VCR - dead;
- all alarms clocks - dead;
and finally...

- our 2 PCs... dead!

Actually, I think (I hope) it's just the power supply, not the motherboard or anything else (especially not the HDs because I don't know what I would do in this case!). I checked inside both the PCs and all the wires and devices look fine, but we never know...

I'm sorry, I wanted to make a quick update for the new website, I think you will have to wait. :(

I will try to give you more infos as soon as I can. I have an Internet access at the University during the week.

Finally, sorry for that bad english, I don't have time to write "properly".

Please, pray that everything will be fine. We had enough with the high-voltage... It's so terrifying to see we all are dependant of those kind of things.

I hope everything works out for you Remi. Be sure and switch that power supply in the PC and then buy yourself a surge protector. And make sure that puppy is grounded! What will your family do without the washer and microwave? :eek

Sorry to hear about the electrical problems and the ruined appliances. I think that's the worst. Do you have insurance for your losses, or would your deductible be roughly the cost of replacing all your stuff?

When we were out of electricity for three days a few years ago, we also lost all the food in our fridge and deep freeze, but it wasn't worth filing an insurance claim. :(

So sorry to hear about this Remi. I hope you are back to normal functioning soon. Your command of English is better than many Americans.

Best of Luck,

Remi,

This is terrible news. Power surges are an appliance's worst nightmare. I do hope that your computer power supply shielded the computer from any damage (especially the hard disk!).

I will have news about the PCs tomorrow (an estimation of the costs). So, I'm still using the PC at the University... :roll:

About the pcs, I think that only the power supplies inside our pcs have been damaged, all the rest (HDs, CD and DVD players) should be ok, but we never know...
It's somehow a funny story because I had to change my power supply form another. My graphic card ATI 9800 Pro was knackered and I wanted to change it to a NVidia GeForce 6600 GT, but the actual power supply I had was not enough efficient.

Do you have insurance for your losses, or would your deductible be roughly the cost of replacing all your stuff?

The cost (changing, repairing or buying new appliances that suffered from the high-voltage) will be entirely paid back by the EDF.

When we were out of electricity for three days a few years ago, we also lost all the food in our fridge and deep freeze, but it wasn't worth filing an insurance claim.

Remember 1999 and the hurricane 'Martin' we had? 3 weeks without electricity, just candles and chimney fire to warm us.

But god damn, 1 week without a PC is too much for me! :snif

Three weeks has me beat! The most I've endured without electricity is a week -- but I was in college and living with my parents. So it didn't seem quite so bad.

18 days without any electric in florida, where you cant even buy fuel for your car and most stores are out of supplies. Hurricanes stink.

I have two newsa good one and a bad one...

The good one is we'll get our 2 PCs back this weekend if things go fine.
The guys have tested my PC (the Dell one) and they found... that nothing (except the graphic card) was damaged!!! :eek (which means I spent a week without my PC whereas it was working fine! :thud:

The bad news is that I am so busy I don't know when I will have time to update the whole website. But I will do my best to make it back ASAP. And anyway, the heart of the website (the forum) is running fine.
