EZB: Major League Baseball 2004

Postby Bud on 23 May 2004, 14:13

Thought I'd try moving this thread over as an experiment. To indicate its from the other board, the subject is flagged with "EZB." You'll see that this isn't a perfect solution, but at least we can migrate the content into the new board. Its pretty easy to do a copy-and-paste and then do some minor editing and cleanup...

New Post Major League Baseball 2004 The season is on, and in spite of the steroid problem, MLB appears to be as popular as ever. My own thought is that baseball is a "comfort" sport and is reassuring during this time of world unrest.

Here's a link to an NPR interview with Jon Miller, ESPN and SF Giants announcer...

New Post Re: baseball! The Angels are pretty good, so why would that make you unpopular? I like the new owner, Arte Moreno. Anyone who comes in and makes his first order of business the reduction of beer prices is okay in my book. Plus he went out and got the best free agents available on the market. Who doesn't want an owner like that?

While I'm on the topic of the American League, I should probably come clean with my team on that side of the game:

New Post Re: Major League Baseball 2004 Well Eric, this season sure is starting different than last year. The sweep ruined what was otherwise a *fine* weekend - one of the short periods every year that the DC area has what is just typical California weather :(

What makes it worse is that I'm actually able to watch most of the games this year. I finally got upgraded to digital cable, which meant I could subscribe to the MLB service, and I couldn't resist. At least there are a lot of games left to be played...

New Post Re: MLB 2004 Well, who else is there on the Giants but Bonds? The pitching has been stinky and BB doesn't have the support he used to. No Kent, no Mueller, no Aurillia, no Santiago. :(

Life is bad when the two best teams in baseball are the Angels and the Dodgers. :down

New Post Re: MLB 2004 - Brushes with Greatness Well Eric this season continues to go downhill. Sounds like Nen might be lucky to come back at all - still has a painful shoulder. Definitely miss Rich and Benito...

Here's a baseball brush with greatness I had in March.

I make what has become a yearly pilgrimmage to Scottsdale for some Spring Training ball. My dad flies in from CA, I fly in from VA of course. Its nice to see my dad, and its nice to get away from the cold East Coast!

A restaurant you have to eat at if you visit Scottdale is Don and Charlies. Its a popular hangout for baseball players, past and present. This year, when my dad and I were waiting in the bar, a couple of tables over was Bob Uecker. Didn't talk to him, though.

When we were done eating and headed out, I spotted a familiar face - ESPN and Giants announcer Jon Miller. Now, I'm not one to ever disturb a celeb (I might have to make an exception if I spotted Diana!), but Jon was alone and waiting for his dinner partners, and there was already someone saying hi to him. So I grabbed my dad and we went over to meet him. Jon is exactly the way he comes across on TV and the radio - very friendly and personable. He asked where we were from, we exchanged pleasantries, and that was it. I'm really glad we went over.

Who was Jon waiting for? Columnist George Will. When I was walking away from Jon, George was walking up to the table. Didn't talk to him, but I'm pretty sure we brushed each other in passing. The cool thing is that if my dad and I hadn't reacted almost instantly to meet Jon, we would have missed our opportunity. Turns out we only had a 5 to 10 second window or we would have been too late.

I got to watch the Dodgers lose Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium. I had a good time mockingly cheering for them. :lol

Well, that little 10 game win streak made the season a bit more enjoyable, don't you think Eric?

I'm embarrassed to admit that in all the excitement of DK appearances, I totally missed that the Giants will be playing the Orioles this year, in Baltimore! A mere hour so away. So I went on-line and got my ticket for 11 Jun. I would have preferred to take the whole family, but I got in so late that only single seats were available. I'm the biggest sports fan in the house anyway.

I just hope my jaunt to Baltimore to see a San Francisco sports team is more successful than my last. I was there when the Ravens demolished the Niners last season...

A friend loaned by the audio book "Moneyball." I'm more than half way through. It is very engrossing!
