Doodling....?

Postby mark in saskatchewan on 04 Jul 2004, 06:04

hey---ok, so sarah vaughan music legend and singer/pianist once recorded a song called Doodling. I can't remember which album it was...i know its been put on a few of her compilations as well. i'm wondering if anyone knows anything more about this song.......? was she the first and only to record it? was it ever "famous" ? does anyone even know what i'm talking about? lol

it kinda reminds me of annie ross's Twisted--similar sense of humour and all.

thanks for any info people!
glad to be back on the board

Hi, Mark

Sarah Vaughan performed "Doodlin'" in some records. I cannot answer all your questions  , but I have this song in "The Ultimate Sarah Vaughan", 1997 release. The song also is in "Jazz Masters 42 - Sarah Vaughan The Sides Jazz". Doodlin’ was a Horace Silver hit, I think..., created and interpreted in 1958 when he played with The Jazz Menssengers.

Mark Murphy did a phenomenal version of 'Doodlin'' on his 1961 album called RAH. And it just so happens that the other song you mentioned, 'Twisted', is on there too. If you don't have that album, you need to get a copy. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever heard!

Thanks for the welcome, Coda!

I actually have an update to the whole Doodlin' thing, too. Mark was hoping someone new would record it, and it seems his wish has come true! Although I wouldn't get excited just yet.

The Manhattan Transfer are apparently doing the song on their latest album, VIBRATE, out in stores in September. It's Doodlin, the cheese-o-rama version!
