Bublé, Krall, Cook win Smooth Jazz Awards

March 8, 2008

Toronto -- After two consecutive wins in the keyboard category, Carol Welsman might have felt slighted when Kristian Alexandrov was announced as Keyboardist of the Year during the fourth-annual Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards ceremony at Mississauga's Living Arts Centre last night. Not to worry, though, for the Toronto-based singer and pianist got a nice consolation prize: Album of the Year, for her self-titled sixth CD.

Welsman was one of many repeat winners. Crooner Michael Bublé, who took Male Vocalist and Best Original Composition honours in 2006 repeated the feat, while flutist Alexander Zonjic, who tied for Wind Instrumentalist in 2006 was named Broadcaster of the Year last night. Jesse Cook won his second award in the guitar category, while pianist Diana Krall was given her fourth "Smoothie" for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Singer and trumpeter Allistair Elliott was this year's top wind instrumentalist, British guitarist Peter White was the International Instrumentalist, and singer Randy Crawford, who marked a comeback with her first album in six years, Feeling Good, was International Vocalist of the Year.

Excelent news "Narrowdaylight"! Thanks.

Michael Bublé and Diana Krall are great singers. They deserved. :)

Cool. I spent 2 years during high-school as a part-time usher at Living Arts Centre. Got to see shows for free. Got to meet some artists. Also, stage-managed a some shows there a few years back. It's one of the best venues in the country. (Amazing wings, an stage-manager's dream!) Anyway, one of the shows I ran was a matinee, and the evening concert that night was Carol Welsman! We got to share the green room for a few hours between shows. She's really sweet, and oh so talented.

I just would like to know if Diana was nominated to keyboard category. As singer, I know, she won her "fourth Smoothie" but the article did not mentioned something about Diana as pianist.

Welsman was getting some play on a local radio station out here. I've listened to a few of her albums, but it seems to me that she shines more in live performances.
Sadly, that 'local station' has just changed formats. So it's goodbye to the mix of 'lite' jazz and softer sounds and more into 60s, 70s and some 80s music. Now no one is really going to be playing folks like Welsman, Krall and Buble where I live. SHAME.

Steve Greenlee: Ali Larter, the actress who plays Niki on the show (Heroes), could be your twin sister. She looks just like you.

Diana Krall: Poor thing.
